A brief History of these Iconic vehicles is presented in this collector's edition Model Kit from Revell on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Jaguar.

The Jaguar E-Type and the Jaguar XK-SS are two of the most iconic and historically significant vehicles produced by Jaguar, a renowned British car manufacturer. Both models have left indelible marks on the automotive world for their beauty, performance, and engineering excellence. Below are detailed facts on each model, highlighting their backgrounds and historical significance.

Jaguar E-Type: -

  • Introduction and Impact: Launched in 1961, the Jaguar E-Type (the XK-E in the North American market) was an instant sensation. Its unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show was met with widespread acclaim, primarily due to its breathtaking design and impressive performance metrics. Enzo Ferrari famously called it "the most beautiful car in the world." The E-Type's influence extended beyond the automotive industry, symbolising 1960s style and elegance.
  • Design and Engineering: The E-Type featured a monocoque body construction, with a front sub-frame carrying the engine and front suspension, which was innovative for its time. Its design was heavily influenced by Jaguar's D-Type racing cars, including the long, sleek bonnet, the disc brakes, and the independent rear suspension. The car's aerodynamic shape resulted from extensive wind tunnel testing, a practice not widely used in car design then.
  • Performance: Initially powered by a 3.8-litre inline-six engine, the E-Type could reach speeds up to 150 mph (241 km/h), an impressive feat for the era. Thanks to its advanced suspension system and lightweight construction, it combines high performance with good handling.
  • Variants: The E-Type was produced in three series from 1961 to 1975, with various changes and improvements. It was available in coupe and convertible body styles. Over time, engine sizes increased, and the vehicle saw numerous mechanical and comfort enhancements.

Jaguar XK-SS

  • The Jaguar XK-SS was essentially a road-going version of the legendary D-Type racing car. After Jaguar withdrew from competitive racing in 1956, several D-Type chassis were left unsold. The decision was made to convert these into road-legal vehicles, resulting in the creation of the XK-SS
  • Production and Rarity: Production of the XK-SS began in 1957, but a tragic fire at Jaguar's Browns Lane factory in March of the same year destroyed nine planned 25 cars. Only 16 XK-SS models were completed, making them extremely rare and highly valued by collectors today.
  • Design and Performance: The XK-SS retained much of the D-Type's racing pedigree, including its 3.4-litre inline-six engine, producing around 250 horsepower. It featured minimal modifications for road use, such as adding a passenger side door, a full-width windscreen, and a convertible top. Despite these changes, the XK-SS remained a performance powerhouse, embodying the spirit of its racing origins.
  • Legacy: The XK-SS has become one of the most coveted classic cars in the world, celebrated for its direct link to Jaguar's illustrious racing history and its exceptional rarity. Steve McQueen, the iconic American actor and racing enthusiast, famously owned an XK-SS, further cemented its legendary status.
