Background Information on the Toyota Celica Rally car as featured in this 1/24 Nunu model kit.

  • Launched in 1970, the Toyota Celica carved out a new niche for speciality cars. Its chic design and comprehensive spec quickly garnered popularity, further amplified by its use as a motorsport vehicle. The Celica's success in the World Rally Championship, under the stewardship of Toyota Team Europe, led by rally driver Ove Anderson, showcased its potential and elevated its global reputation. The first-generation Celica made its rally debut in November 1972 at the RAC Rally.
  • The Celica rally car evolved over a number of years and midway through the 1988 season, the Celica underwent a significant transformation based on the fourth-generation model. This was the birth of the Celica GT-FOUR (ST165), designed for Group A racing following the discontinuation of Group B Rally.
  • The engine of the Celica GT-FOUR, an inline four-cylinder turbocharged powerhouse with a 1988cc displacement, was a significant feature. Additionally, the Celica GT-FOUR incorporated the sophisticated British XTRAC 4WD control system to achieve optimal torque distribution across all four wheels based on road conditions.
  • Given its original non-rally design, an adaptation of the Celica for rally racing necessitated significant developmental effort. The Celica GT-FOUR made its World Rally debut in 1988, with full-scale competition commencing in 1989.
  • Despite numerous tests leading to the completion of the Celica ST165, challenges in actual competition were inevitable, requiring further development. However, these efforts paid dividends in 1990. Drivers Carlos Sainz, Armin Schwarz, and Mikael Ericsson finally demonstrated the vehicle's capabilities.
  • Carlos Sainz clinched the 1990 WRC Driver's Title, earning Toyota its inaugural world title. In 1991, Sainz triumphed in the first round of the Monte Carlo Rally and Portugal.
  • In the fifth round, Sainz claimed victory, while Marc Duez from the Toyota Fina Team secured fourth place in the Tour de Corse. The Celica ST165 has since been renowned as a classic rally car. With numerous staff and drivers contributing to its development and success during Toyota's full-scale participation in the World Rally Championship, the Celica ST165 evolved into a true masterpiece of rally racing.
