Touring car racing, a staple in motorsports, showcases ordinary road vehicles transformed into circuit course competitors, offering a spectacle beyond their usual city driving capabilities. This racing category, steeped in history, has evolved. In 1981, the sport adopted an alphabetic grouping system, leading to the prominence of Group A racing. Here, the modifications to production-derived cars were limited, intensifying the need for performance enhancements in the base models to excel in competitions. Despite its growing popularity, Group A racing saw limited manufacturer participation due to rising costs.

• Responding to these challenges, the Super 2000 regulations, introduced in 2000, built upon the Group A framework but aimed to reduce costs. These regulations, applied to mass-produced cars, set constraints such as a 2L naturally aspirated engine and 2WD for touring cars. Adopted by notable championships like the British BTCC and the European Touring Car Championship (ETCC), this format saw increased participation.
• BMW, a long-time contender in touring car races, embraced the Super 2000 regulations. The BMW Super 2000 touring car, developed from the 1999 model change of the E46, the fourth generation of the three series, was a notable entry. Featuring a front-mounted, inline-6, 1990cc DOHC 24-valve engine, it delivered 250 horsepower through natural intake. Paired with a sequential 5-speed transmission and a rear-wheel-drive layout, its front strut and rear double wishbone suspension ensured effective power delivery.
• In the 2004 ETCC season, the BMW 320i E46 was fielded by teams like BMW Team Italy-Spain, BMW Team Belgium-Luxembourg, and BMW Team Deutschland. Andy Priaulx of BMW Team UK notably clinched five victories, including the Donington Park race in England, leading to his championship title that year.
