Bone constitutes the fundamental part of our joints. For movements to be smooth and joints to be flexible there must be a layer of cushioning and lubrication between the bones. This layer is made up of a shock-absorbing tissue called cartilage and a natural fluid called synovial fluid. A healthy cartilage and synovial fluid make it possible for joints to move easily and comfortably.

With age, the cartilage covering bones in joints is degraded, resulting in limitation of movement and pain. With time the water content of the cartilage increases and the protein makeup of cartilage degenerates. Repetitive use of the joints over the years irritates and inflames the cartilage, causing joint pain and swelling. Eventually, cartilage begins to degenerate leading to complete degradation in advanced cases. Loss of cartilage cushion causes friction between the bones, leading to more pain and the limitation of joint mobility. Inflammation of the cartilage can also stimulate new bone outgrowths (spurs) to form around the joints.
