Bee Health Propolis

  • What is Propolis

Propolis is collected by Honeybees from buds and trees, it’s a natural substance made up of a variety of different compounds, first used by the Ancient Egyptians around 5500 BC. Raw Propolis contains tree resin (the bees use this to build their hives), essential oils, waxes, and bioflavonoids. These substances are responsible for Propolis’s many properties, including its antibacterial and antifungal effects. The chemical makeup of Propolis is very diverse and can vary from one region to another. This is due to the plant material, climatic conditions and type of bee collecting the resin. Resins come from many types of trees, shrubs and plants depending on where they grow in the wild, which explains why so many different resins are used to make Propolis. Other resins have been a traditional part of natural medicine, such as frankincense and myrrh which both have well-documented anti-inflammatory properties. When collected by bees, these resins are then mixed with a range of other components such as bee saliva and essential oils to form Propolis.
